I plan to make it alike Heroes of Might&Magic map editor with few controls for terrain editing from SimCity. At the moment tool is not capable of making maps from scratch for there are some unclear values in map format.
I've coded minimap to display terrain map correct. I started coding module responsible for loading trees/houses from KM resource files. I have certain problems with palletes and loading images both to KaM Editor UI and OpenGL, but I hope to solve them and continue with other tasks.
Aswell I started coding terrain-painting with auto-transitions between different terrains :-)
I'll write more WIP info if you are interested in reading it.
I'm open to your suggestions.
P.S. Do you know a way to run KM in a window ?

Smart-tiling is almost done and oyu can check it out in recent Alpha3 version available here
Still there are few issues to solve:
- non-blending terrains (grass and snow for example);
- re-tiling original maps (atm Editor needs additional info available only in scratch-made maps). For issues listed above copy/paste function will be added later.
In other hand there's a good news:
- KaM supports scratch made maps (192x192 and even more).

This looks very good.
But, I will give you some tipps:
- multilanguage support
- implementing mission data and houses
- please, think about, that the editor don't can open *.map and *.dat files!! the users can cheat and manipulate the game terrible! use an map-project format!

user, which can open multiplayer maps, could they edit and cheat. Think: your cheated map is full of gold, but the other players have the original map. Do you udnerstand? Also could the game chrash...
The next is, you could cheat in single player mode.
It would be better, to rotate the terrain type by clicking the right mouse button, if one terrain type was selected. Now you set down the terrain type with right mouse button. Understand?
Use an realy Icon Border like Style Builder, this is the correct Windows GUI element.
By starting tool, the error message of bbm file sux. Could you abort the tool, if kam isn't installed?
If this editor will finish u will be a part of the KaM-history!
But i think mission-editing will be difficulter than terrain-editing. Placing buildings u can make easily, but troups and their movement and their Face directions.
